Safety certification passed on the first attempt
The balancing act between strict compliance requirements and the wish to truly improve processes — all under an ongoing audit obligation.
Starting point
In rail transport, compliance isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s a prerequisite for operating at all. The challenge: meet regulatory requirements without process work degenerating into a pure box-ticking exercise.
Both belonged to the same organization but ran as two separate efforts — proof for the regulator on one side, work on the workflows on the other. Twice the effort on the same processes, and neither side helped the other.
Approach
With an integrated management system, the safety-relevant processes were mapped cleanly, linked and kept verifiable. Requirements, processes and operational context came into one shared view — so that they carry weight in daily work and hold up under audit alike.
Outcome
The certification of the safety management system by the German Federal Railway Authority was completed successfully — the proof fell out of the ongoing, maintained process work, instead of being a project of its own beforehand.
